It's also an unrealistic expectation from us that crimes should stop completely. If crimes have indeed increased in Vic for all communities, then it would also affect the Ind community which is a sizeable part of the population now.I agree to the view point that no govt can fully eliminate street crimes in cities.

Talking on phone to a relative in a train is not offence,but talking in such a way that the entire compartment can hear what you are saying is definitely not welcome in any culture that respects individual privacy.

I do fully agree with you that Aus govt has no business commenting about internal security in India. If at all,their brief should end with concerns abt security of Aussies while in India.
But we should also understand that this particular remark was passed by Victoria's police commissioner,not by any minister or ministerial authority. In matters as serious as this,a nations viewpoint can only be conveyed by the external affairs minister or a spokesperson of the ministry. It's our overzealous media that is picking up comments made by anyone & everyone in OZ to pass it off as a nation's opinion.

What our media doesn't realise is that if it thinks that over-reporting can waken up authorities & it can also have a domino effect in spurring up racial feelings. The cartoon on Klu Klux Klan was totally unnecessary if not out rightly stupid.
Such reporting would also create a fear psychosis amongst Indians or ppl of Indian descent living in Oz which is totally undesirable.

I won't fully agree to the point that Aus govt is in denial.If it has denied something, it's just the racial angle of it. They have indeed stepped up patrolling in Melbourne last year. The place where the Indian community is concentrated in Sydney is the only place in this City where I saw 4 police cars stationed.
We'll have to wait for the investigation to conclude to see whether they were indeed racial or not.I strongly believe that it's a valid demand by the Aus Govt. Why should racism affect all communities? It is typically targeted at some communities which are typically minority communities. As you yourself said, there is an increased immigration from India and that is increasing the attention of racists?

Based on what you are saying, if the chinese and other immigrants are not affected, the racial angle becomes even stronger.

I don't get the logic in not policing more. If they are not policing elsewhere, there is less crime. If there is some place where there is more crime, policing has to increase. it is quite simple.

I am not saying they can behave the way they want, but speaking on the phone to your relative in India in a park doesn't constitute an offence.

Like i said, we seem to blame the victim's behavior for the victimization. This is exactly the same argument lot of rape victims were told. Now the world knows better.

Oz is in denial. In that state no solution can be found. Saying Indians are a lot safer in Oz than in India is BS.

There is clearly something that doesn't add up here. I don't think any racist guy would declare for himself that he would target only Indian students. The only possibility I see is that they become highly vulnerable targets of street crimes cos they move ard alone in the suburbs at night for working in night shifts.

And again,we cannot brush aside the remarkable job Australia has done so far. It's handled migrants so well so long & reached enviable standards of living. It's so very multicultural unlike any other place.

We not become Australian from Day 1 we land here, but we should obviously maintain realisation that we are not in India.
I still believe if Chinese students, African students are not getting beaten up, then we clearly have some introspection to do before we start pointing fingers.

I sometimes compare it with we visiting our neighbour's house. Just cos we pay money to get education, doesn't mean that we have the right to behave the way we want in another country. As you might agree,policing is very non intrusive in Aus,there are hardly any cops to be seen anywhere in Sydney CBD at anytime of the day.

Racism or no racism,I was only trying to figure out a solution to this. I don't think increased policing can effectively decrease racist crimes. If at all they are racist attacks,it would require a mindset change which is difficult to bring about. I feel it would be much easier to make sure ourselves that we are safe. We can't keep loosing lives/getting ourselves hurt just cos the OZ govt doesn't do anything.

I am sure this problem of acculturation is there in many countries. For example, a bazillion Indians migrate to USA, Canada, UK and other countries. The numbers of immigrants to these countries will be orders of magnitude bigger than immigrants to Oz. How come there are no systematic attacks on Indians in these countries?

Clearly Oz has a problem. They had better wake up and smell the coffee before the $2B revenue stream evaporates.

I am told that Indians are spending close to $2B on Australian educational institutions. With that type of revenues, Australia should be creating a special police force that focuses on safety in and around campuses patronized by Indians.
